Q: What
are the basic requirements for adopting through ASA?
A:
The best interest of the child is of paramount consideration and the decision
to accept applicants is the responsibility of the Director of Placements,
an experienced certified social worker who evaluates the specific child's
needs, birth parents' expectations and the adoptive parents' preferences and
suitability.
Therefore, the following basic eligibility requirements are not exclusive
but may be adjusted or waived based upon the professional judgment of the
Placement Director.
Eligibility Requirements
Adoptive families must meet the following basic eligibility requirements at
the time of application:
1 ) Establish proof of marriage, showing a minimum of three ( 3 ) years of
this union. Applicants are not disqualified if there is a history of previous
marriage.
2 ) Be of an age over 21 and predictably be able to raise a newborn or infant to majority.
3 ) Be free from communicable disease and in sufficiently good physical and
mental health.
4 ) The minimum educational requirement is high school completion.
5 ) Show a stable employment history, sufficient financial resources and adequate
living conditions conducive to a child's well being.
Although the above requirements are preferred, “each case will be considered
on an individual basis."
